2021 NHL Draft: Flyers select Owen McLaughlin 206th overall

That’s all, folks! The Flyers have made their final* selection of the 2021 Entry Draft and picked up center Owen McLaughlin.

*unless they very quickly make another trade and add a second seventh round pick at the last minute to make me look liar.

McLaughlin spent the bulk of his season playing at the U18 AAA level with Mount St. Charles Academy, where he put up a decidedly not too shabby 16 goals and 38 assists in 33 games played.

He also had a brief run playing with the US NTDP at the end of the season, with four and seven games in that USHL/USDP split. He didn’t pick up any points in that span, but getting that opportunity in the first place is no small accomplishment. And between that and McLaughlin’s scoring numbers at the high school level, there’s a whole lot that’s interesting about his profile. And coming in the seventh round, it’s a really nice low risk pick with the potential for a high reward.

We also cannot resist mentioning that he’s pretty close to a Philly local, hailing from Spring City, PA.

Per Flyers AGM Brent Flahr, McLaughlin will be going to Sioux City of the USHL next season, but once he moves on to the NCAA level, he’s committed to play at Penn State, and should be a nice addition to their program there.
